Atletico Madrid defender Lucas Hernandez has been diagnosed with muscle overuse following tests done after he was forced off at halftime during the club's Copa del Rey second-leg clash with Las Palmas, on Tuesday, which they lost 3-2.

That is according to the club's official website, who report that the 20-year-old Manchester City target will be working with physios in order to regain full fitness.

A statement read: "Lucas Hernández has undergone some medical tests at FREMAP Mahadahonda on Wednesday and has been diagnosed with "a muscle overuse in the right anterior thigh".

"The left-back had to be substituted in the half-time by Gabi. The red and white (Rojiblancos) player will be working on his recovery with physical therapists' treatment and alternative training sessions in the gym."

Despite the loss, Atletico have moved on to the quarter-final stage of the competition, having won the first leg 2-0.

Their league form has been slightly less impressive though, lying back in fourth place behind Sevilla and Barcelona, and a full nine points behind leaders Real Madrid - who have a game in hand over their rivals.
