Manchester United have confirmed that young goalkeeper Sam Johnstone has joined Championship side Preston North End on a one-month loan.

The 22-year-old, who actually hails from Preston, already spent the latter half of last season on loan at his home-town club, helping North End earn promotion to the second tier of English football via the League One playoffs.

Johnstone began the 2015/16 back at United and was promoted to second choice behind Argentine international Sergio Romero while David de Gea's future was still up in the air.

Prior to that, the former England U-20 stopper had been given plenty of playing time on United's pre-season tour of the United States, where he put in a number of promising performances.

Johnstone hasn't played a first-team game since, in fact he's never played a competitive senior game for United, and is understandably looking forward to getting out on the pitch again.

"It's good to eventually come back, I'm glad I'm back and hopefully I can start playing games now," he told Preston's official website.

“It's great to be around the team at Manchester United, but I am 22-years-old and I have to think about myself a little bit and I need to be playing first team football. I get to do that now in the Championship, which is a great league to play in."

Preston managed Simon Grayson added, "Sam is someone we know very well and someone we tried to sign in the summer. It is a big boost to have him available and back at the football club again.

"We made no secret of the fact we wanted Sam back in the summer and we made a huge effort to get it done, but it didn't materialize then, however, we are in a good position now, bringing in someone who knows all about us, knows the players and the way we work and hopefully he will slot back in just how he left us at Wembley."

To provide extra cover for de Gea and Romero while Johnstone is back in Lancashire, United recalled 19-year-old Joel Castro Pereira from his loan spell at Rochdale earlier this week.
